Most people don’t think of pine forests when they think of the Grand Canyon or the state of Arizona. However, the world’s largest Ponderosa pine forest is in Arizona.
Although it’s not the predominant form of pine in the state, a Ponderosa pine forest stretches from near Flagstaff along the rim to the White Mountains to form the largest stand on the continent.
The three-needled Rocky Mountain ponderosa pine is the most common pine tree found in Arizona.
Petrified forests are the unique attractions enjoyed at Petrified National Park. This national park is located 118 miles east of Flagstaff, off Interstate 40. Giant Saguaros can be seen in large numbers in Saguaro National Park, in southern Arizona. Located about 16 miles east of Tucson, Saguaro National Park is home to some enormous, towering cacti. Saguaro are only found in a small area of the U. S., and here is one of the impressive displays of the subtropical giants.
