Grand Canyon Country Book Review

National Geographic Park Profiles
Grand Canyon Country
200 Pages
$16.00

Finding a book on the Grand Canyon is easy, but finding one with in depth writing, original photography and the prestige of National Geographic Magazine can be difficult. This is why the National Geographic Society’s Park Profiles series is so spectacular. Similar in size to their award-winning magazine, this glossy soft cover is a must for any Grand Canyon lover.

From the start this book sets the tone that the Grand Canyon is a place one must see before they die. The opening two-page photograph of the Canyon at first light, immediately brings readers into the grand splendor of the Canyon and it’s colors.

The book begins with an essay on the parks geology and history, intermixing historical quotes, short bursts of factual information and stunning full-page photography.

The next several chapters highlight the Park’s two rims and the rim to rim trail linking the North and South rim together. Author Seymour L. Fishbein does a great job referencing the Canyon’s history with today’s visitor experience. Fishbein ends with a long chapter about the Colorado River and the photography is out of this world.

Meant to be enjoyed in long chunks of time, don’t expect to pick up this manual and quickly scan its contents. Similar in layout to National Geographic’s magazine, expect to find maps, famous quotes, how-to information and eye-popping imagery only National Geographic can provide.
