Grand Canyon Guidebooks

Picking the perfect guidebook to the Grand Canyon can be a tough challenge. Hundreds of books have been published over the years providing turn-by-turn directions to the Canyon’s wide network of trails, while providing hikers with inside information about historical landmarks, geology, campsites and where to find water.

The following two guidebooks each offer a slightly different perspective on the Canyon and should be considered when looking for a guidebook.

Hiking the Grand Canyon
Third Edition
John Annerino
Sierra Club Totebook
$16.95

This small pocketbook is perfect for backpackers and day hikers not wanting to carry around a full-size trail guide. The 300-page manual includes rich historical information with a wide-range of information about how to experience the Grand Canyon by foot. The book is very text heavy so expect to spend some time reading about the trails and the canyon’s geology, but its easy-to-use layout provides quick access to important information you might need.

Hiking Grand Canyon National Park
Second Edition
Ron Adkison
A Falcon Guide
$14.95

The Falcon Guide series is one of the most respected guidebook series on the planet and this edition does not disappoint. Much larger than the Sierra Club Totebook, author Ron Adkison does a superb job laying out information about the Park and hikes available to visitors. Unlike the totebook there are several full-page maps and photographs showing the trails highlights. The hikes are broken down by the North and South Rim and Adkison does a good job accurately representing their strong points.
