Heading to northwestern Arizona and want to explore more than just Grand Canyon National Park? No problem, several national forests, state parks, national recreation areas and national parks surround the Canyon and provide visitors with a variety of desert playgrounds including pristine lakes, archeological sites and razor-thin slot canyons.
To the North:
The Grand Canyon is big, so if you’re on the South Rim expect at least a four hour drive to navigate your way around to the northern side of the state, but once you do several of the west’s premier national recreation areas are just waiting to be explored.
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
Originally one of America’s premier desert canyons, this large manmade lake is a perfect place to catch a few days of solitude before moving back into the fast-paced world of work life. Slot canyons, fishing, a round of golf and Lake Powell are all options for the adventurous traveler looking to play outside. If you go make sure to book a houseboat and explore Lake Powell for at least two days and don’t be surprised if you succumb to the slow life desert western lifestyle. If you do get to explore the lake make sure to check out the shore since the lake is substantially lower than in previous years due to drought. You’ll notice this by the large white bathtub ring marking the previous waterline.
Zion National Park
Zion National Park doesn’t need too much introduction. Located on the southwestern tip of Utah less than a day’s drive from the South Rim, Zion National Park is a spectacular journey into the depths of a red rock canyon. Unlike Bryce National Park and Grand Canyon National Park you will find yourself looking upward at the towering red rock walls. If you go make sure to hike the Narrows, a spectacular slot canyon that can be done in a day, and if you’re really adventurous a trip up to Angels Landing, a spectacular overlook and extremely steep hike.
To the South
South Wupatki National Monument
Perfect for families or history buffs looking to spend an afternoon checking out ancient Pueblos, South Wupatki National Monument is just a short 3 hour drive from the south rim. The crumbling walls provide spectacular photo opportunities against the harsh desert landscape and if you are able to visit during sunset make sure to watch how the light bounces off the walls before the site is enveloped in complete darkness for another night.
To the West
Lake Mead National Recreation Area
Similar to Glen Canyon National Recreation Site, Lake Mead is a hotspot for boaters, fisherman, backcountry hikers and photographers. The area is make up of two large lakes, Lake Mead and Lake Mohave and is usually explored by houseboat or backpackers weaving in and out of the desert’s slot canyons. It is also facing similar water level problems as Lake Powell, so make sure to explore areas previously underwater.
