Be A Kid Again in the Grand Canyon

Kids Ranger Program

Grand Canyon rangers offer a unique, interactive program for kids designed to heighten their senses and enhance their appreciation of the natural environment. Called “Way Cool Canyon,” the presentation uses games, activities and stories to shift participants perspective of the natural world. You may find yourself hugging a tree, going on a blind-trust walk, using a magnifying glass, or attempting to hop like a rabbit and run like a deer. The goal of the program is to push you away from relying solely on your eyes to interpret the world around you. Suddenly you’ll become more aware of the sounds, smells and textures of the canyon. A smooth piece of limestone can feel cool and slippery against your skin, while sandstone is rough like an emery board. The bark of a Ponderosa pine is papery, flakes off in your hands and smells like vanilla, but most of us miss these subtle details without having someone point them out.

Way Cool Canyon is great for kids, but even adults will benefit from taking a moment to shift their perspective and open their experience to all dimensions. After the 90-minute program, you can check out a Discovery Kit for the rest of the afternoon to continue your exploration. The Discovery Kit includes binoculars, a hand lens, field guides and other tools for budding naturalists. It will change how your family views as well as smells, hears, tastes and feels the Grand Canyon forever.

Kids who complete the Way Cool Canyon program can become Junior Rangers and receive a badge and certificate. You can also become a Junior Ranger by filling out an activity book, answering questions about the park, and attending a ranger program. Specific requirements vary by age. The Junior Ranger program is designed to engage your kids and encourage them to learn more about the park during your visit.
