NATURAL WONDERS

It might be ridiculous to have a subcategory on our Grand Canyon website for “natural wonders” since Grand Canyon is the most popular natural wonder in the U.S. and anyone who has been here wouldn’t argue. Nevertheless, in addition to the Grand Canyon, there are other natural wonders to enjoy while on your Grand Canyon vacation, including stunning waterfalls, valleys full of natural (rock) monuments, painted deserts, “narrows” and “slot canyons”, rivers, caverns, and more.

Rivers and Lakes

Grand Canyon National Park is smack dab in the center of some world-class lakes. But we must provide a disclaimer. This section is called "natural wonders." The three world-famous lakes are all man-made, the results of damming on the Colorado River: Lake Powell, Lake Mead and Lake Havasu, but it would be a disservice to not mention these lakes. Among Arizona's natural lakes are Mormon, Ashurst, Kinnikinick, Stoneman and Upper Mary are all natural lakes located in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, AZ. These lakes are a wonderful place to have a picnic, camp and to get off the beaten path and enjoy some high country during your Grand Canyon vacation. Rivers abound as well. The primary river in the Grand Canyon region is the mighty Colorado River, the river that carved the Grand Canyon and the river that was dammed to create some world-class fisheries and recreational areas. The Colorado River flows more than 1,400 miles. Its headwaters originate in Rocky Mountain National Park and the river flows to the Gulf of California. Other rivers in Arizona include the Little Colorado, Gila, Verde and Bill Williams River, as well as one of the Colorado River's tributaries, the Green River, in Utah.  > See More

Waterfalls near Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon region is not exactly a land of waterfalls. However one of the most beautiful and photographed waterfalls in the United States, Havasu Falls, is located in Grand Canyon West. Sure, visitors will have to backpack, hike or ride a horse or helicopter to access this waterfall, as well as the handful of other waterfalls in its vicinity, but it's worth effort! Havasu Falls is blue green and plunges into some terrific secluded swimming holes. > See More
