The Grand Canyon is the country’s most popular natural wonder. But this region is home to more than the Grand Canyon. A lot more. It’s a gigantic recreational mecca for outdoor enthusiasts of all types. One of the reasons is Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which is situated in northwestern Arizona and southern Nevada.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a protected and managed designated recreational playground, and visitors to the Grand Canyon, Arizona and Nevada will be grateful for that fact.

Two Reservoirs: Lake Mead and Lake Moajave

The star features of Lake Mead National Recreation Area are its two reservoirs: Lake Mead and Lake Mojave.

Formed by Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, Lake Mead is the largest man-made lake in the United States. With a surface area of 248 square miles, this lake is massive, which means there are endless opportunities for lake and water recreation from boating, jet skiing, houseboat rentals, fishing, camping, hiking, and more.

Lake Mojave is formed by the Davis Dam on the Colorado River and defines the border between Arizona and Nevada. Lake Mojave is about 68 miles downstream of Lake Mead and is situated at just over 600 feet above sea level. It is best accessed via Laughlin, NV or Bullhead City, NV.

Three Deserts: Mojave, Great Basin, Sonoran

But the lakes are not the only reasons to spend time at Lake Mead Recreation Area. In fact, this NRA is home to three out of four of America’s desert ecosystems. the Mojave desert, the Great Basin desert, and the Sonoran Desert, resulting in a great variety of plants and animals that call this region home.

Lake Mead National Recreation is a world-class destination for outdoors enthusiasts, whether your interests are boating, water sports, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, exploring the desert, camping, and more.
