The hardest thing you may face at Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort in Tucson is the inevitable fact that you will have to check out.

From its spectacular gardens, two pools with views of the Santa Catalina Mountains and its two restaurants, this historic property is a fantastic basecamp to explore Saguaro National Park and the rest of Tucson. The east entrance to Saguaro National Park is a 35-minute drive and the west entrance is 45-minute drive.

Built in the 1920s, this stunning resort was originally a prestigious girls’ school where daughters from the Vanderbilt, Pillsbury and Westinghouse families came to learn. Today, it’s known for its historic charm, food, wine list, live music, stellar customer service and the get-away-from-it-all experience it offers.

The Hacienda makes it really easy for you to never want to leave it because it’s home to two great restaurants: The Grill, one of Arizona’s top restaurants, and the Terraza Garden Patio and Lounge, a casual dining experience. Both venues host live music.

“We feature well-known local artists and feel that the music style and ambiance compliments our menu offerings and surroundings,” says assistant general manager Geoffrey Campbell.

And the menus include dishes containing herbs, micro-greens, kales, peppers and broccoli grown and picked on the property in the chef’s garden. The resort even has its own “Bartenders Garden” for its bartenders to utilize in a variety of hand-crafted cocktails and specialty drinks.

The Grill at Hacienda Del Sol offers breathtaking mountain and city views and classic guitar and piano seven nights a week. Its menu features local ingredients from the resort's organic gardens and local growers. The Grill's wine list, with over 850 selections, was twice bestowed "The Award of Ultimate Distinction" by Wine Enthusiast Magazine and has been awarded the "Best Of Award of Excellence" from Wine Spectator for 16 consecutive years.

“We have always had a passion for offering a diverse selection of wines from around the world, and the owners have invested in both the talent and inventory to maintain its position as having the best wine list in Southern Arizona and perhaps the state of Arizona,” Campbell says. “We have several wines from Arizona on the list and in particular the wines from Dos Cabezas Wineworks and Callaghan Vineyards are a must try.”

Eat in the open air at the Terraza

Looking for a more casual setting? Head to Terraza Garden Patio and Lounge, a charming open air bar patio with a barrel-rolled brick ceiling. Enjoy stunning views in a garden patio setting with delicious Spanish style tapas and bistro sized plates. Pair them with a seasonal cocktail and wine menu and a wide array of non-alcoholic beverages.

The Terraza is open for lunch, dinner and a late night snack. The Terraza is temperature controlled year-round and when the weather is nice the sides and roof are retracted, so it’s a completely open-air dining environment.

Known as one of Tucson’s best “back bars,” it has 100 offerings of Scotch, bourbon, tequila and top shelf liquors. It also features live jazz on Thursday evenings; Latin jazz, country and classic rock on Fridays and Saturdays; and blues featuring Marty Kool on Sunday evenings.

A Room of Your Own

With accents like rustic wood beams, furniture designed uniquely for the Hacienda, Talavera tiles and all around rustic Hacienda charm, the Hacienda has retained its original charm.

While each room may share the rustic charm of the Hacienda and the Old Pueblo-style, no two rooms are exactly alike. The luxurious rooms are elevated by the natural charm of the Sonoran Desert and detail-oriented owners.

Want to explore the ranch by horse? See some of the resort’s 34 acres, along with the surrounding area, on a horse. The rides include an elevated viewing area where you can see the distinct mountain ranges in all directions. Campbell says the viewpoint is called Sunset Hill because the view of the sunset cannot be beat. Choose among 1 hour, 1.5 hour and cross country rides for riders of all levels. There’s also a wonderful sunset ride and lead-line rides.

And after riding off into the sunset, you’ll be welcomed back to the resort with Southwestern hospitality that will keep you coming back.

“I love the warm and friendly friends I get to work with each day,” Campbell says. “Our service culture is the same among the staff as it is to our guests. We genuinely enjoy serving each other and providing memorable experiences to each other.”
