High Desert Fun in Chino Valley

Find fun in the Central Arizona Highlands in the state’s first territorial capital: Chino Valley. Here are five places to stop.
Perkinsville Road
Why go: This scenic dirt road will bring you from Chino Valley all the way to the artsy town of Jerome or the Route 66 town of Williams. The final stretches of the road leading to Jerome has a steep drop off but the expansive views of the Verde Valley and Sedona’s red rocks in the distance are a well-earned prize.
Tip: This dirt road is passable by most cars unless there’s been an afternoon thunderstorm or winter snow.
Winey Cats at Granite Creek Vineyards
Why go: On the grounds of one of Arizona’s classic vineyards, this property under new ownership offers live music every Saturday afternoon from 1-4 p.m in the summer and fall. Sip wine and enjoy a diverse lineup of musicians amongst the vines. You can also book private wine tastings by contacting the vineyard directly.
Fun Fact: The name “Winey Cats” comes from the on-site cat sanctuary.
Peavine Trail
Why go: This hiking trail follows the route of the old Santa Fe, Prescott, and Phoenix Railroad in broken segments all the way to Prescott. Hike or bike the section through Chino Valley to see a sweeping ranchlands and views of the surrounding mountains.
Tip: Park at E. Perkinsville Road and Jerome Junction Road for access.
Insurgent Brewing Co.
Why go: This Arizona brewery serves a variety of IPAs, Ales and Blondes alongside housemade pretzels, wings, pizza and more. If you’re not a beer drinker, they also make their own in-house hard seltzer.
Don’t Miss: If you’re thirsty in the morning, head to Overflow Coffee and get an espresso drink to sip on the patio.
Chino Valley Aquatics Center
Why go: Cool off at this great outdoor pool with a water slide, fun fountains that rain water overhead and a zero-depth entry perfect for little ones.
Tip: The pool is closed on Sundays.
