Grand Canyon Junior Ranger Programs for Kids

Junior Rangers follow the directions below to earn their certificate and badge. Earn the Raven, Coyote, Scorpion Award, or the special Phantom Rattler Patch.

Junior Rangers help to preserve and protect national parks. They learn about nature and history, have fun exploring the parks, and tell their friends, families, and schoolmates about their adventures. Junior Rangers continue to protect the environment at home and at school.

At Grand Canyon, Junior Rangers must follow the directions below to earn their certificate and badge. All Junior Ranger programs are free of charge.

Ravens, Coyotes and Scorpions! (Ages 4 and up)

To become a Junior Ranger at the South Rim, pick up the Junior Ranger Activity Booklet at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, Park Headquarters, Tusayan Museum near Desert View, Kolb Studio or Yavapai Geology Museum. On the North Rim, pick up the booklet at the Visitor Center. Complete the requirements listed in the booklet for your age group. Requirements include writing your observations, drawing pictures, creating poems, and attending one of our ranger-led programs. View the schedule of ranger-led programs.

3 Grand Canyon Badges

When you finish your activities, bring the booklet back to the Visitor Center for review by a ranger. Each Junior Ranger will take a pledge and receive an official Grand Canyon Junior Ranger badge and one of the following certificates:

  • Ages 4-7: Raven Award
  • Ages 8-10: Coyote Award
  • Ages 11 and up: Scorpion Award

If you bring your certificate to one of our park’s non-profit book stores, you can purchase a custom sew-on patch to go with the award you received.

Phantom Rattler Junior Ranger (ages 4 – 14)

The Phantom Rattler Junior Ranger patch is a special patch that can only be earned by Junior Rangers who hike or ride the mules to Phantom Ranch, at the bottom of Grand Canyon. These Junior Rangers must pick up the activity booklet from the canteen, the campground, or the Ranger Station and complete the activities in the booklet. When they are finished, they can receive a badge, certificate, and a free patch from the park ranger at Phantom Ranch. The Phantom Rattler program is available throughout the year.
