Though tough to spot against the multicolored backdrop of Arizona’s dry desert, coyotes are an important part of Grand Canyon’s natural ecosystem.
When the sun goes down and the moon rises, it’s not uncommon for visitors to hear the howl of coyotes off in the distance echoing throughout the canyon. If you think you’ve spotted a coyote, look for it’s pointed ears and black-tipped tail typically held downward, which is different from wolves and dogs.
