Stay at the Grand Canyon Lodge at North Rim

If you’re looking for a different view of the Grand Canyon, head to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park where you can stay in a historic lodge built in 1928. Located approximately a four hour drive north of the park’s more popular South Rim, the North Rim is higher in elevation than the South Rim and less crowded, which makes it an incredible way to experience the Grand Canyon. Tucked in a coniferous forest, your stay at the Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim will be the perfect basecamp to explore the peace and beauty of this side of the park. It’s also the only lodging on the park’s north side.

At the Grand Canyon Lodge, you can choose to stay in three types of cabins or in a motel room. All lodging is located just a short walk from the main lodge where you’ll find the check-in desk, a restaurant, a gift shop and more. Western Cabins have two queen beds, a full bath and a private front porch. They can comfortably sleep four. For smaller groups, the Frontier Cabins have a double bed and a single bed along with a bathroom with a shower but no tub. Pioneer Cabins are the largest with two separate bedrooms. The master bedroom has a queen bed, and the second bedroom has a twin-sized bunk bed and a double pull-out sofa bed. There’s one bathroom with a shower but no tub. This cabin is great for bigger families and can sleep six. Some of the Western and Pioneer Cabins even have rim views.

Two motel buildings located a short walk from the main lodge offer rooms with a queen view and a private, in-suite bathroom. A roll-away bed can be added to sleep three.

When Should I Reserve a Room at the Grand Canyon Lodge?

The Grand Canyon Lodge is the only place to stay on the park’s North Rim, and it is justifiably very popular. It’s best to attempt to book a cabin or a room as soon as the reservation window opens, a year in advance. Reservations open on the first of the month for the following year. For example, reservations for June 1-30, 2023, will open on June 1, 2022. Reservations can be made online and open at 7 a.m. MST.

Why is the North Rim of Grand Canyon Closed in Winter?

While snow might not be something you’d picture seeing at this desert park, the North Rim area sits at 8,297 feet in elevation and sees heavy snows in the winter months. On average, this part of the park receives 142-inches of snow each season. Because of this and its remote nature, the entire North Rim, including the Grand Canyon Lodge, shuts down each winter from October 15 to May 15. 

What is There to Do at the North Rim?

In the lobby of the Grand Canyon Lodge, you can sign up for a one-hour or half-day mule ride to either take in the sights from the rim or descend into the canyon on the North Kaibab Trail.

Those who wish to explore on their own two feet should check out the North Rim’s various hiking trails. A favorite is the North Kaibab Trail, the only trail that enters the canyon from the north side. A great day trip is a hike from the rim to the picturesque Supai Tunnel and back. This is a 3.4-mile roundtrip hike.

Where Should I Eat at Grand Canyon’s North Rim?

Don’t miss having a meal in the beautiful historic dining room in the Grand Canyon Lodge You can eat breakfast, lunch or dinner surrounded by picture windows, stone walls and wooden beams in the ceiling. The menu features regional dishes alongside menu items from the 1930s. Reservations are a must for dinner and should be made as soon as they become available in February each season.

If you’re looking for something more casual, there are several other options in the main lodge. Try Deli in the Pines which features grab-n-go sandwiches and salads, made-to-order sandwiches, pizza by the slice, soup and snacks. The Roughrider Saloon is a great place to grab a drink to enjoy in the saloon or to-go, alongside snacks. For morning fuel before you hit the trail, grab a handmade espresso drink or coffee and a pastry or breakfast burrito at the Coffee Saloon.
